One of the biggest challenges of a city strategy is to get it to shape what actually happens on the ground. Too often city plans ‘hover in the air’, alluringly just out of reach of reality.
Urban renewal can be a case in point. Everyone agrees it should be a bigger part of the growth story for our major cities, but it’s not always clear where.
Welcome news then from last week’s Victorian Growth Summit, where the Metropolitan Planning Authority presented a clear case for defined renewal precincts to absorb a big slice of Melbourne’s future growth.
The MPA now has responsibility for implementing Plan Melbourne – greenfields and urban renewal – and has been given planning authority powers for greater Melbourne to back it up.
Pleasing progress which the industry is watching closely.
