Westport Shortlist Announced

The Westport Taskforce released its shortlist of options for developing a new container and other goods port for Perth and the greater South West area over coming decades. The shortlist of five options was narrowed down from an initial list of 25 that examined the possibility of building a new port facility along the coast between Fremantle and Bunbury.

Although Fremantle Port continues to operate short of its cargo capacity, complexities around the transport network into Fremantle Port means its real capacity is not sufficient to cope with expected increase in container trade.

The Taskforce’s five options all include a new port at Kwinana, with two options relying on continued operations at Fremantle that would share the long term shipping capacity with a new port at Kwinana.

Options mooted for Kwinana include a range of different port types, including convention island and land-based ports, as well as hybrid models that see shipping berths located further out to sea, connected to land and transport modes by a land bridge.

Property Council WA is a Westport Taskforce Organisation that is involved in the consultation process shaping the development of a new port. Property Council WA will continue to work with the Taskforce to better understand the options canvassed, in addition to remaining a strong influence in ensuring members’ interests and feedback are taken into account as the final location is explored and decided.
