Victorian projects vie for national property awards
Twenty-two outstanding Victorian projects and three future leaders are finalists in the prestigious national property awards.
The Victorian finalists are among 128 announced ahead of the 2020 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards.
The awards program, now in its 38th year in partnership with RLB, showcases innovative projects, pioneering solutions and inspiring leadership in Australia’s property industry.
“Victoria is competing in 15 categories – a testament to our local industry’s commitment to innovative and inspiring projects that create better places for people,” says Cressida Wall, the Property Council’s Victorian Executive Director.
The property industry is Australia’s largest, employing 1.4 million people and generating $202 billion, or
13 per cent, of the nation’s GDP.
Among the finalists are the Flinders Street Station Administration Building Exterior Restoration, which is a contender for the S4B Award for Best Heritage Development.
“This project has saved Melbourne’s busiest public building by restoring its façade, strengthening its structure and preventing further water damage from roof leaks. Now repainted in its original colours, the building can continue to be the face of Melbourne for many years to come,” Ms Wall explains.
Two Victorian projects are competing in the Development Innovation category: Woolworths Heidelberg and the Atherstone People Movement and Precinct Planning Project.
“Woolworths’ most environmentally-friendly store, boasting a 5 Star Green Star rating, is big on sustainability features, community benefit and customer experience – and sets a new benchmark for future retail developments,” Ms Wall says.
“Atherstone – a development 40 kilometres west of Melbourne’s CBD that will one day be home to 15,000 residents – features some of the smartest technology in the country and will help the local council make better planning decisions,” Ms Wall adds.
Four Victorian office buildings are squaring off in the hotly-contested Best Office Development category: Lendlease’s One Melbourne Quarter, Target Australia Headquarters, T&G Building – Pembroke, and Walker Corporation’s Collins Square. RLB provided services on all four office buildings.
“These four office projects illustrate how well-designed and executed office developments can transform a city,” says RLB’s Director, Ewen McDonald.
“The $3 billion Collins Square, one of the largest commercial office development in Australia, seamlessly integrates commercial office space with a retail podium over an entire city block, while the $2.9 billion Melbourne Quarter project features the city’s first-ever sky park,” Mr McDonald says.
“Target’s new workplace at the $2 billion Williams Landing Town Centre will play a key role in the future of a dynamic and growing region of Victoria.
“And the extensive refurbishment of the historic T&G Building is a thoughtfully-curated business community that maintains the charm of one of Melbourne’s best-loved heritage buildings, Mr McDonald adds.
Three rising stars are competing for the NS Group Award for Future Leader of the Year: Adam Jones from WoodSolutions, Scott Carne from SMEC and Melissa Tokkuzun from Turner & Townsend.
All Victorian development finalists are in the running for the Victorian Development of the Year and the industry’s most coveted prize – the Rider Levett Bucknall Australian Development of the Year award.
“RLB has proudly co-hosted these awards since 1982. Over the last 38 years, the awards have become an important platform to recognise and reward the people and companies building great cities and communities,” Mr McDonald concludes.
National award winners will be announced at the 2020 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards Gala Dinner, to be held at the ICC Sydney Convention Centre on Friday 15 May 2020. Tickets are now on sale.
