Planning Development Unit a Huge Win for Good Growth in NSW
The Property Council of Australia has today welcomed the announcement from the NSW Government on the new Planning Delivery Unit (PDU) which will work with government agencies to unblock planning projects stuck in the system and streamline planning processes.
“Today’s announcement is a significant win for the property and construction industry, and a positive step towards fixing the planning system and getting developments underway to support jobs and good growth in NSW,” Property Council’s NSW Executive Director, Jane Fitzgerald said today.
“The Property Council has taken a leadership role on the absolute importance of streamlining state agency approvals to reduce housing costs, boost housing supply pipelines and improve planning processes so we are delighted to see our preferred model commence today.”
The NSW Government has also announced that the PDU will be led by former Liverpool City Council CEO Kiersten Fishburn and will focus on resolving issues in major development applications (DAs), State Significant Developments and planning proposals.
“We warmly welcome the appointment of Kiersten Fishburn to lead the Planning Delivery Unit – she will be a great asset. Through her previous role as CEO of Liverpool City Council, Kiersten has a first-hand appreciation of the planning system challenges faced by local councils and the property industry in navigating major projects.
“We look forward to working with Kiersten and her team to ensure we have a strong pipeline of planning approvals and projects to support the recovery of our state’s economy.”
The PDU will have an initial four projects to prioritise in the next eight weeks that will create opportunities for more than 66,500 new jobs and 50,000 new homes across Greater Sydney which include the Parramatta Road Corridor Strategy, St Leonards Crows Nest 2036 Plan, Glenfield Precinct and Marsden Park North (and West Schofields) Precinct.
