Our History

While our organisation was established in 1969 as the Building Owners & Managers Association, 2016 marks 20 years since we were reinvented as the Property Council of Australia. To celebrate this milestone we have created an interactive timeline tracking the Property Council's evolution from humble beginnings to the present day.

1969 – BOMA incorporated

  • Expansion to all capital cities
  • Expansion beyond the office sector to other commercial sectors
  • Core member services developed advocacy, events, conferences, professional development, research, information
  • State executive directors employed

1996 – Reinvented as the Property Council of Australia

  • New name, revised constitution, fresh executive team
  • Advocacy becomes core focus
  • Major professionalisation of services
  • Employment of state policy advisers

2001 – Property Powerhouse strategy

  • Launch of Residential Development Council
  • Establishment of International and Capital Markets Division
  • Helped establish the Green Building Council of Australia
  • Major growth in sponsorship
  • Launch of Innovation and Excellence Awards
  • Launch of propertycouncil.com.au

2006 – Powerhouse 2010 strategy

  • Sophistication of policy agenda
  • Deputy EDs for big divisions
  • Stronger regional coverage: Hunter, Illawara, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, southwest WA
  • GFC arrests growth trajectory

2010 – Powerhouse 3D strategy

  • Big boost in advocacy resources​
  • Expansion into retirement sector, launch of Retirement Living Council
  • Australian Property Hall of Fame launched

2015 ​– The Property Council strategy 2015 - 2017 

  • New campaigns to tell the industry's proud stories
  • Strong public voice
  • Championing diversity, including through the Property Male Champions of Change
  • Repositioned Property Congress, Leaders Summit, Property Council Academy and research offering
